Inexpensive Health Insurance - An Oxymoron?

An oxymoron is a figure of speech that joins two contradictory thoughts such as "wicked good" or "deafening silence". For many people these day, inexpensive health insurance has become a similar contradiction of terms.

In the United States especially, the costs of healthcare have skyrocketed which naturally affects the cost of health insurance. While health insurance may not ever be seen as truly inexpensive, it is possible to find insurance coverage at reasonable rates.

For most people, the most inexpensive health insurance plans are going to be available through their employment. Since employers can get a group rate, the cost for the individual employee is usually quite a bit lower than if they had to get private health insurance. Another thing that often helps with the costs is that many employers will pay a portion of the employee's insurance costs as a part of their benefits. For two income families where both spouses have employer-offered health plans, make sure that you compare the plans offered by each employer before deciding which policy to go with. Clearly, the plan with the most coverage at the lowest cost to the employee would be the right choice.

If you are self-employed or health insurance is not offered through your job, you will have to look around for private health insurance. This still doesn't have to mean paying the highest rates, however. There are several things you can do to make sure you get the most inexpensive health insurance available for your needs.

You need to realize that insurance policies will vary widely in terms of what they cover and what they cost. Not only do they vary from insurer to insurer but even within the umbrella of one company, the policies available will all be different. The first thing you should be doing is determining exactly what you need for health insurance.

Do you make a relatively high income and so can afford to pay incidental medical expenses out-of-pocket? Then perhaps you should look for a major medical policy. This will protect you from financial ruin should you have an emergency requiring hospital stays or major treatment but won't cover routine doctor visits or illnesses.

If you have children that will need to be covered by health insurance, you would be better off getting a more comprehensive medical policy as children will need to go to the doctor more frequently than most adults. In this case, though, you can often find a plan that will allow you to raise your deductible in order to get a lower premium. If you have a higher income or a good emergency cushion in the bank, this would make a lot of sense.

Inexpensive health insurance isn't an oxymoron but you will have to look around to find it. You must investigate all your options and if you need to obtain private insurance, you need to compare a lot of plans. It used to be that you would have to call or stop in to many different insurance companies in order to compare all the options. Fortunately, the internet saves a lot of time in that area because you can easily compare rates from several insurers.
